Cultivate's TED and TEDx Business Success

Cultivate’s Journey to TED Business Leadership

It started as a grassroots effort. Cultivate’s founder, Steve Garguilo, and Senior Partner, Matt Kane, started the first ever global, multi-national corporate TEDx Business Event (TEDxJNJ) back in 2012. Their initiative led to a multi-year transformation within the Company (Johnson & Johnson) and inspired programs at Samsung, Intuit, Disney, BCG, Intel, IBM, UPS, and hundreds more!

Three speakers and 65 participants were there at the beginning when the first ever TEDxJNJ event was held. At that point, no one knew if this program would exist three months later, let alone years later.

Since then, our team has designed and delivered 200+ TED-style events in more than 30 countries as well as 100+ experiential learning experiences with cross-functional, cross-sector, all-level teams at Global 2000 organizations.

Case study of TEDxJnJ with Cultivate's founder Steve Garguilo and Matthew Kane titled Serious Play

“TEDxJNJ allows for that cross-fertilization and provides space for people to connect, to start dreaming, to think of better ways to do things.” - Derek Fetzer

In the fall of 2011, Johnson & Johnson witnessed the birth of an innovative movement with the first TEDxJNJ event at the Triumph Brewing Company in Princeton, New Jersey. This grassroots initiative, held off-campus and outside official hours, brought together a diverse group of colleagues to share their unique ideas and bold ambitions. The event sparked a belief among participants that J&J needed a space for radical, out-of-the-box thinking to unlock the untapped potential within its 130,000 employees. They realized that while J&J’s established culture focused on efficiency and profitability, it also posed constraints that could hinder future innovation and transformation.

Over the past six years, this initial gathering has grown into a sophisticated, self-organizing community of 23,000 members across all J&J sectors and regions. The Office of Creative Engagement has nurtured this movement, aiming to foster a 24/7 culture of innovation throughout the company. This community has led to significant impacts, including breakthrough medical devices, global health collaborations, and energized, innovative workforce. Through their commitment and creativity, these volunteers have created a robust network for sharing ideas, developing leadership skills, and driving change, thus transforming J&J’s approach to innovation and future readiness.

Alcon’s Expanded Partnership

We utilized the TEDx format to create TEDxAlcon as a space to rally around new ideas and new ways of doing things in the organization. Overnight, new celebrities were created across the company as junior level employees shared their ideas and built movements.

Leaders were so impressed with the energy and impact, that they institutionalized TEDx and established a second TED-style speaker program called the Alconic Leadership Series.

Our expanded partnership includes quarterly meetups, team offsites, company summits, and leadership communication training.

Takeda’s International Success

After supporting Takeda’s US TEDx events for two years, we were honored to partner with Takeda on this first international event. Our work included speaker coaching and support, experience design, graphic and slide design, and merchandise purchase and shipping.

This event gave a platform to those passionate for change to showcase their ideas and results in a culture that supports the group over the individual.

The global 2024 event had a 90 NPS with a 9.33 average rating.
